Maramuresului County

tara

Land of wooden churches, religious glass paintings of a great folkloric and mythological value, Maramures county is situated in the north of Transilvania, in the north-west of Romania, covering an area of over 3.300 sq km. Naturally protected in the south side by majestic mountains and the lazy waters of Tisa river in the north, this region, deeply marked by history and myths, remains untouched by the XXth century’s influences. Direct descendens of the free Dacians, the locals knew how to protect their traditions intact over the centuries. The peasants still wear hand weaved clothes to work, changing then with traditional clothes embroidered in black, red and white.

Romanians, Hungarians, Jews, Germans, Ukrainians, different and diverse cultures have lived together and blessed these lands leaving signs of their existence for eternity. Nature, friendly people, ancestral traditions, historic monuments and unique tourist sites are just a few reasons to come to Maramures.
